How to avoid that your dog gets lost or stolen

How to avoid that your dog or cat get lost or stolen

Every year more than ten million (yes, 10,000,000+) of dogs are lost or stolen in the USA.  Something similar happens in other countries.

Most of these loved pets to never being found again.   They get lost for ever,  never to return to their homes.

This creates a series of emotional disturbances in the families that lose these so much loved beings pets.  Pain, suffering, anguish, desperation.  More, if they are companion, emotional support and/or service dogs.  Even if these so much loved pets are recovered, the few times it happens, while they are lost, the anguish is desperate.   Minutes seem like hours, and hours seem like days.

Why do pets get lost?

Pets get lost due to a series of reasons.  Most of them preventable.  Pets get lost when they run away from their homes or when they get to far away form them.  This could be due to playing and running, chasing somebody, other animal or object,  usually another animal.  Dogs are very curious and investigatives.  The love to research things.  Anything can get their attention and distract them.  When they realize it, they are very far away from their homes or families.

This happens frequently when they are taken for walks, to friends and families homes and houses, to places far away from their homes and from their everyday surroundings, like parks, parking lots, green areas, forests, beaches, etc.

Noise can many times put them to run away.   They have very sensitive hearing.  Loud sounds hurt their ears and they try to hide or run far away from them.  Thunder, lightning bolts, electric storms, gunshots, explosions, fireworks, pyrotechnics, etc.  Abuse makes them run away and escape from their houses, too.

Some say that dogs can with their small find their way, but in reality this isn’t always true.

Why are dogs stolen?

Also, there are many reasons for a dog to be stolen.  Two basic reasons are, the main one, for money.  Cash.  The other one is because someone likes your doge y s/he takes it given the opportunity.

robbery of dogs for money es the most common.  The most expensive the dog, the more probabilities of it being stolen.  Depending on what it is wanted for, and the demand for it, will the price be.   The temptation for it to be a steal.  Breed, size, color, skills, fur, and appearance could incentives for a dog to be stolen.

Another reason for dog to be stolen could be that the dog is not wanted in the community where he lives, or by a neighbor.  The dog will be stolen by a neighbor or some resident to sell it, give it away, or to dump him/her.   This way, to get rid of the unwanted or annoying dog.   Other reasons are possible.

Prevention or how to avoid losing your dog or cat

Remove or reduce any situations that can provoque that your dog get lost o be stolen.  This could be a daily task.  It is said that it is better to prevent or to avoid than it is to remedy.  There could be the condition that no remedy is available if no prevention or precautions were taken beforehand.

For a dog not to get lost o to runaway or escape from the house could be prevented from several ways.  To avoid for a dog to escape or get lost.  First, if the dog is on a yard or playground, you have to keep it with a good fence.  Preferibly that the fence be a smooth wall.  That fence not be with anything that can be used as a ladder.  Like cyclone fence or horizontal tubing.  Dogs are very inventive and will use anything as steps to get out of any confinement.  Even if you don’t believe it, they are very smart and they will do it.  I have had acrobat dogs that climb fences as easy as any step ladder.  They have even jumped over the fence.  It happens often.

If you use tubing, put them vertically and very close one to the other so that the dogs don’t have steps or space to get through the tubing.  And it should be high enough so that Fido can’t jump over it.  I had a canine that could jump over five feet (5′ / 1.5 mts.) fence.  And, build a concrete footing deep enough into the ground so that your dog won’t dig under the fence.  They, too, dig under the fence to make a hole and get out to the other side.  To the free community.

If your dog is inhouse, it is easier to control.   You should keep an eye on the doors that get to the outside.  They will take advantage of any opportunity to get out through them.  Take care to have them always close and when going out, care that the dog doesn’t escape through your legs.  You can use a child or dog gate.  You can train your lovely pet stay inside.

If the dog is kept outside and there isn’t a fence, that’s quite risky.  Even if you train your dog not to leave certain areas, or limits.  Even with that training, any special event or situacion can call its attention or scare him/her and make him leave the assigned limits.   Probably, running after another animal or running away.

You can tie your dog with a collar and dog chain or leach. This requires surveillance.  The dog can get tangled with the leach, another dog can come and attack him and he could not defend himself or escape.  Another option is to have him inside an ample cage with a comfortable dog house inside.  This is to protect him from the weather, like sun heat and rain.

When you take him for walks, always have him on a leach.  Never loose in public areas.  Loose he can disappear in a blink of an eye.  Another consideration is female heat season.   Bothe sexes can disappear looking for a mate.  Dogs can detect a female in heat at a long distance.

There are ways to avoid or reduce risks of your dog being stolen.   In addition to the ones above.  The indispensable thing to do  is to keep him under surveillance at all times.  Because when you least expect it your dog can be stolen.  Among these preventive ways is to have security cameras pointing to where the dog is.   Movement detection cameras are the best. This way any movement towards the dog can alert you of it.

Other measures are not to leave your dog alone unattended anywhere.  Not in dog parks, parking lots, outside stores, green areas, in your vehicle, when visiting your family or friends.

Lost dog search community

There are groups that dedicate their time to search or promote what pets are lost or stolen.  These groups have a system of community cooperation where people in differents of the country are members and help one another.   They to search y find those hairy friends with four legs.  Pet owners register with these groups in their data systems online.  Information on every pet and how to contact their owners are included.  Photos of the pet are included.  Every pet owner/father/mother/aunt/uncle should register with these communities.

When a member’s pet is lost or stolen, immediately he should notify the group online registration center.  He should give all known details about the event.  The system sends the message to all the members of the system.   If any of the members locate the pet, he informs it to the system and the system notifies the owner.  Thousands of pets have been recovered through this system.

That is, this system forms a network of searchers that love animals.   They help each other, mutual help, to find those lost pets.  Register you pet.  This is an excellent system to locate your pet in the event that it gets stolen or lost.

One of the registraries is:  lostfoundpets.us

System of data in the dog or the microchip

There exists a system where a device is inserted in the skin of the pet the size of a rice grain.  This microchip has the recovery information in it.  There is a registration of the pets data including its health condition and owner contact details.  The insertion doesn’t hurt the dog and it doesn’t bothers him.  It lasts about 20 years, practically the lifetime of the dog.   It doesn’t uses batteries and has no moving parts.  Nothing to wear out.  It has to be inserted by a veterinarian.

It has to be registered in a national system so that the data can be recovered.  A scanner can access this information.  These scanners are used by veterinarians at their offices.  The Humane Society of USA is one of the registrars.

This chip can’t be tracked by GPS (satellite) nor a tracker or by cellular phone.  The idea is if the pet gets lost, whoever finds him will take the pet to a veterinarian to scan him.  This way the veterinarian will access the dog’s owner information and health condition of the dog.  This way, the owner can be contacted.

The ideal event is that all veterinarians scan all pets brought to their offices the first time that the pet is taken  their offices.  This way the vet can lookup the data and see if the pet is with his right owner.   Or if the pets belongs to another person.

It is very important that all data in the registry is kept up to date.   Specially, phone numbers.  If the owner changes address, phone number he should inform it immediately.  If the pet is sold or given away, the new owner must update his data.  If the chip doesn’t have updated data, there is no way to contact the owner.

Many animal shelters are inserting these chips in their 4 legged guests.  In some countries this is becoming mandatory: United Kingdom.

Dog tags with QR codes

We all know those dog and cat tags that people place on their pet collars, me, too. These tags have the name, phone and sometimes, owner’s address.  These serve as contact forms in case that the pet gets lost.  People can look at the tag and see this information and contact the owner.    Many times only the phone number appears.   The problem with these tags is that if the information inscribed in the tag has changed, there could be no way to contact the owner.  And nothing else is known about the pet.  Probably, the pet needs some kind of treatment or that he can’t eat certain foods.

Now there exists a tag, but digitized.  On one side there is a message and on the other side there is a QR code.  This is a small square with a design that can be read by most cellular phones.  The camera of the phone reads the QR code and access the data of the owner.  This is a combination of the regular dog tag and a microchip.

It doesn’t use energy (batteríes), thus, no charging needed.  When through the QR/phone system the tag is detected, the service center communicates with the owner’s phone internet informing about the location of the pet.   This is how the owner and pet can be reached.  This is when somebody finds the pet and sees the QR code on the tag and scan it to obtain the data.   It is Es durable.

It is similar to the microchip functions with the advantage that it doesn’t have to be taken to a veterinarian office to be scanned.   At present, almost everybody has access to a cell phone, so its data base is easily accessible.  The chip has to be inserted by a veterinarian, the tag anyone can place one on the collar of the dog.

Satellite trackers (GPS)

A very efficient way to know where your pet could be is through a satellite tracker or best known as a GPS.  The pet generally has it on his collar.  It doesn’t weight much.   And it is easy to install.  Through a device a signal is sent to a satellite and this is sent to a service center.  This data is access by the pet owner through an online webpage or his cellular phone.  Using Google Maps the pet’s location is pinpointed.

In addition, these trackers and be used for health followups, the pets activities, health condions, cardiac and breathing rhythms, exercises.  They use batteries, there are charging times.  Depending on their use is the days the charge will last.  It is an excellent device for location pets stolen or lost.
